I keep a notebook always at my belt — not for finished thoughts, but for the half-formed ones. Once I spent an evening watching water curl behind a bridge post, sketching the little spirals over and over until I understood why they turned as they did. Nobody had asked me to; the eddy simply refused to let me go. That is the whole of my method: I do not sort the world into art and science and leave them in separate rooms. A bird’s wing teaches me the arm’s machinery. A face teaches me light.
